AUGUST 2002 |
31st August 2002
I get up in the early afternoon, get my stuff ready in about an hour and pack it all in the car. A little after midday I'm on my way to Nottingham to move myself in and get some last minute work done for my exams. I'm pretty damn stressed out and just feel like curling up in a ball. Like woodlice do.
Track of the day: Incubus - A Certain Shade of Green
30th August 2002
Arrive at something like 9am in London. So refreshing to be in my mums little car driving on the left on our small roads on the way back. No aircon required and its not humid at all. I'm fairly tired as I barely slept on the way back, and all I really want right now is to have a shower.
Track of the day: Red Hot Chili Peppers - The Zephyr Song
29th August 2002 - Canada
We leave the hotel in the morning to catch the flight back home. I should really try and sleep this time!
28th August 2002 - Canada
We hadn't planned what we were going to do today. As we wandered around the city, we came back to the harbour. We couldn't think of anything better to do than go to Centerville park yet again. It was a nice sunny day (it almost always is). When we got there we went to the place where you could hire out bikes. We hired 2 tandems :) It was loads of fun, my little sister and I on one and My sister & cousin on the other. It was hilarious watching the other tandem wobble about. Tandems are so relaxing and such great fun. I really want one!
27th August 2002 - Canada
Went to a huge mall today to to some shoppin'. I bought a new pair of shoes, and then I got bored. After the mall we went to the top of the CN Tower. We went at just the right time, the sky was clear, there was no mist and the sun was just about to set. We could see for miles, and it look gorgeous. As the sun set and cast darkness over the city, the lights looked great. We hadn't planned to go up the tower today which meant that I didn't take my camera (doh!), but it was truly gorgeous. Later that night, we went out to a tiny little restaurant in the little india road of Toronto (every city has one, like a chinatown - witness Southall in London). Chicken Biriyani is good after a busy day.
26th August 2002 - Canada
Set out from the hotel in the morning on our way to Niagara Falls. I don't think there are words to describe it. In fact, I don't think pictures could describe it either. There is nothing to capture the intense motion of such a huge volume of water falling a crazy distance over such a massive area. I took loads of digital photos. We also went on the Maid of the Mist boat ride which takes you close to the fall. It was incredible.
25th August 2002 - Canada
Had a great day chilling out. Had a picnic in the park with all the family and relaxed on the beach.
21st to 24th August 2002 - Canada (Wedding)
More family arrived in Toronto, we hired some Minivans and made our way to Coburg where my cousin was getting married. After the wedding we got a good deal to move into the Hilton in Downtown Toronto, which is where we checked in on the night of the 24th.
20th August 2002 - Canada
We went to the Canada National Exhibition (CNE) today. It was a gorgeous sunny day, not a single cloud in the sky. There was a great big fairground, and we went on 17 rides! It was loads of fun, and it was baking hot. After being flinged around in all directions we were all pretty tired. I couldn't be bothered with the market stalls that were around, but I also missed out the great big tent that was there. Apartently there was bungee-jumping going on somewhere around there, and I was a bit gutted that I didn't see it. The exhibition was huge, and pretty amazing.
19th August 2002 - Canada
When we went to Centerville park a couple of days ago, we didn't take my cousins son & daughter, so we thought we'd go again. I win at mini golf this time and my little sister gets a hole in one on one of the really difficult shots. We didn't stay for long this time but it was still fun.
18th August 2002 - Canada
Met up with my cousin at her house in Toronto. Hadn't seen her for a really long time. We took the 'streetcar' (tram), the underground and a bus to get there. It was great since we got there on the same ticket (by picking up 'transfers' - quite confusing for us Londoners ;). My cousin had a great view from their flat, and we talked for ages. She made us a awesome dinner too. Such a relief of homemade indian food after 3 days of eating junk.
17th August 2002 - Canada
My 2 sisters, aunt, cousin and I wandered around town, ate falaffel and headed for the harbour. We then sat in the sun overlooking the water drinking Iced Cappucinos & feeling good. So many different boats from tiny little canoes to huuuge yachts. I decided we should take a $3 ferry to Center Island where there is an amusement park. I played my sisters at mini golf, drove bumper cars and had loads of fun. On the way back, it was a picture postcard view of the city at sunset, the sky was red, the CN Tower and skyscrapers lit up and the Skydome glowed blue. It was great, though I was gutted that I forgot to bring the camera.
16th August 2002 - Canada
Amongst other things, today we moved hotel to one that is closer to Downtown, as we've found that we were in the middle of nowhere.
15th August 2002 - Canada
Arrived in Toronto after a 8 hour caffiene-fuled flight from Amsterdam on KLM. It was an ok flight, the coffee was good, I got to see spiderman again and they served pizza. Still, it was quite a stressful day since we got ripped off when it came to getting transport to the hotel, and the rooms stank of smoke when we specifically ordered non-smoking. After much arguing we got it all sorted out. My brain is telling me its 5am HMT (Hussein's Mega Time) at about 11pm, and since I didn't sleep on the plane I think I've been awake for about 23 hours. Its a good thing that coffee was strong stuff.
14th August 2002
Goin' to Canada tomorrow! Its going to be fun, & gorgeous weather too. Can't wait. Lots of stuff to do. Back on the 29th, in time to go straight back to Nottingham. Must finish packing! Byeeee!
Track of the day: Badly Drawn Boy - Stone on the Water

Track of the day: Incubus - Crowded Elevator
10th August 2002
Playing with Wake-On-LAN today. Hours of fun, I can send my sisters computer a 'Magic Packet' from either the AMD Magic Packet utility in Windows or ether-wake (in an apt package called etherwake) in linux to make it turn itself on (potentially from anywhere in the world - but generally when I'm in my room over wireless LAN). Once its booted, I can VNC in, mess around and shut it down, freaking out my parents. Quality! I'm pretty annoyed and frustrated that I can't seem to wake my SV25 fileserver from LAN ('cos that would actually be *useful*). Hmm, should really do more work now and stop playing with it.
Track of the day: Adina Howard - Freak Like Me
9th August 2002
Upgraded my little sisters computer today because I felt like it. It used to be a PII400 with 128MB RAM (100 Bus) running Windows 98, and now its a Coppermine PIII600 with 512MB 1Clk ECC RAM (133 Bus) running Windows XP. Cool, now they can play Solitare faster and er, use the latest version of MSN Messenger. Bah, well at least it actually can play high quality DivX's without skipping now and the DVD playback is a lot better too.
Track of the day: Red Hot Chili Peppers - Universally Speaking
7th August 2002
I took a few 'lil webcam pictures of my new computer cos I'm really that sad ;)

Installed Debian Woody on the laptop today using a Vaio CDROM borrowed from my friend Chris. Its pretty sweet, the sound is not configured right straight away, apm has a few issues and my wireless lan is not quite set up but everything else works straight out of the box. X, 3D, Memorystick, Built-in LAN, Jogdial - Its all there. A bit more fiddling and it should all be OK.
Track of the day: James Brown - The Boss
3rd August 2002
Oh Yeah. My new Sony Vaio PCG-R600MX laptop rocks the world. Its small, thin, light, fast (once I put in more RAM to take it to 256MB) and simply gorgeous. Its really really nice. The sound quality is *amazing* (through the output - the speakers are OK at low volume too), the 3D is not bad (Quake II at 640x480 in a window runs at about 25fps in hardware - better than I thought). The Celeron 800 is a lot faster than I thought, and it gives it a really nippy feel, combined with the fact that it boots Windows XP in about 1 minute flat, suspends and resumes in no time at all makes it really neat. Naturally, the keyboard, touchpad and the screen are all top notch too (well, there is one dead pixel near the top that does not want to come on green - but it was to be expected). I'm chuffed.
Track of the day: James Brown - Papas Got A Brand New Bag
2nd August 2002
Passed my driving test today! Oh Yeah. Driving in London is very different to driving in Nottingham. Loads more crazy nutty people, smaller roads, more traffic and much more mayhem. Still, I got it all sorted which means that hopefully I'll be able to drive one of my parents cars. My laptop didn't arrive today which got me pretty annoyed at the guys who I bought it from (I ordered it on Wednesday at 10am, I wanted it by the weekend dammit!). Anyway, they said that it would be here tomorrow. It had better be!
Track of the day: War - Lowrider
