2002

13th June 2002
Booked a Driving Test today. *Sigh*, if I don't pass this one I'm going to be in trouble, as it is getting expensive and I will also have to take a theory test again :(. Well, I need to start ticking things off on my list I suppose. I got my results today. They sucked. A lot. I need to resit DOC, OBJ, CON and CMP in September. I got a bullshit average, and I will need some stupidly hard work and an average of a 1st next year to even think about a 2:1 overall. There is a hell of a lot on my mind at the mo'. I want to just lie on my bed and listen to Moby, but I just threw my CD player against the wall and I don't know where it is now. Doesn't look like I'm sleeping again. Probably a bad idea since I'm working something like 9 hours a day, 7 days a week for the next few weeks. FFS, why don't I just jump in front of a bus already.

I got the new Moby album today. I put it on at work on the low quality boombastic system (tooo much bass on thæt thing, and no treble at all), and I wondered why I bought it because it sounded really bland. I took it home and had a listen on my little CD player and JVC headphones. Its gorgeous, there are very intricate twinkly pieces which are real quality, it flows really well and is a very complete record. It is very different to Play though, and this album sounds a lot more like Kings of Convenience, as in it is more bedtime music. Great Stuff.
Track of the day: Moby - Sleep Alone

Started work at Computer Exchange. To mark the beginning of the computer hardware buying spree, I upgraded my 60Gb drive in my jukebox to an 80Gb one... Just because I could. I was just thinking about what exactly I have to get sorted in this holiday, as there is a hell of a lot of stuff.
Well, some of that is fun. Some of it is a pain in the arse. Bah.

Extreme Computing 2002 - I think this concludes the question of whether I am actually an incredibly sad geek deep down inside

Went to the NTK/Mute Festival of Inappropriate Technology (aka Extreme Computing 2002 aka Xcom2002) today. It was pretty awesome! I met mjl who had a stall with his wearable computing gear. I tried out his head up display which is so amazing, it really is like something you would expect out of some crazy sci-fi movie, with a display perfectly overlayed onto reality and with your eyes easily being able to adjust from focusing on the display to focusing on something else. Olly was also there demoing the cool stuff you can do on a Dreamcast, like boot into a Linux kernal and do things like mp3 and DivX playback! Elite! Yeah, I was fascinated; Sony shared their stand with him demoing Linux on the PS2 which was also pretty cool. There were robots galore, with some very interesting ones, like one which used a camera to track movement of people walking in front of it, and having a moterised eye follow them around. That was very interesting as it is sort of similar to my 3rd year project. There were also video game cabinets, just like arcades but internally they were PCs running MAME arcade emulation with a choice of 100s of games :) There were some other guys around showing how to make the 'standard' wireless networking antenna out of an empty Pringles can. Oh, and I bought a really sad (but fun) tea towel featuring an old MacOS screenshot of Netscape on a Google search for "Please help me". It really was a great day out.

Packed up all my stuff in Nottingham today. A couple of hours of work changed my room into an empty box with boring white walls. My dad came to pick me up, and we filled up the boot of my mums car with my stuff (thanks for the help Sid & Kenny). Hmm, I won't be going back to that house again. It was a fun place. Some of my friends came over to say bye, and I got a couple of super-cool late birthday presents of the When Incubus Attacks - Volume Two DVD and some fun plastic stuff that can be blown up to make permanent balloons! Yay! Thanks Guys! :D
Track of the day: Incubus - Summer Romance (DVD Acoustic)

Went to the C2 girls party. Next year, Laura is going to be in France and Ruth in the USA. I'm going to really miss them! Sob.
Track of the day: Nightmares on Wax - Ethnic Majority

Went to Alton Towers with loads of my friends. It was *great*. Sid, Kenny, the C2 girls, Dan, Kristina, Will, Adam and the Malaysian girls were all there, as well as Lou, Stu, G, and the Monkey. Even the jcm turned up which was really cool. The fact that he arrived after it started raining and only went on one ride was less cool ;). It rained a lot, but thats OK because the queues got a bit shorter. There were up to 100 minute queues for Air, but we picked up virtual tickets for it and a few hours later we strolled onto the ride past the queues. I love that ride, it really makes you think you can fly :)
Track of the day: Wyclef Jean - Perfect Gentleman

Its 10am, and it seems that no-one else in the whooole world is actually up yet. I'm just here, on my own, listening to Basement Jaxx. Yesterday I was at Dans barbecue where they filled up their back garden with people, which was really cool. I've started reading Sinfest again from the beginning, and got through about a year and a half of it since yesterday morning. It makes me smile and sometimes laugh out loud, its the greatest :)
