OCTOBER
2002

31st October 2002
Its 4AM, but I have already slept, I'm awake as in a just-got-up state. There is something very wrong with that. Now I can't decide whether to sleep more or just stay awake to sync myself with reality. I remember back at school, I had never seen 4AM, I would sleep at 11 and wake at 7, like clockwork. I did it for so many years that I wouldn't really even need an alarm clock, I would get up and turn mine off with one minute to go before getting up and out. That was funky.

30th October 2002
I had a GEM talk this morning. It was quite bad. My slides were bad, there was no real proof to what I was talking about and it sucked a lot in general. I had a fortnight to do it, yet I was making slides at 5AM this morning. Well, it was my fault. Why am I so completely stupid sometimes? Btw, caffiene and sugar drinks like Shark or Red Bullshit are BAD. Its a good idea for me to never drink one of those dreaded things again.

27th October 2002
Extra hours are useful. It feels like now the clocks have gone back, I am now synchonised with the rest of the world. There were some serious winds last night, trees fallen all over the place and its damn chilly outside. Dan & I are off to the motorshow in the NEC. There are issues when we find that none of the trains are running due to the weather (erm, er, how the hell am I going to get back to Nottingham later?). We finally find out which bus to take and from where in town and end up getting to the NEC which is eight miles from his house in three hours. It was a pretty cool show. There was no Mercedes or BMW stands (no new Z4, 7 Series or any BMs, but AMG were there which was OK from a Merc point of view although there was no SLR again). We didn't find the Lambo stand either, which mean't no gawping at the Murcielago. Aston Martin made up for it with a pretty awesome collection of machines (I'll take a DB7 GT please), as did Jaguar (.. and an XKR). We sat in some Bentleys, and a new Range Rover. Dammit, they didn't let anyone sit in the Lotus Elises ;( I want one. I bought an Elise keyring, and collected a few posters. We were there for quite a while and we had a good laugh, the best part of the whole day has to be the Mini show. This is where there was a large isolated room which had stunt drivers driving around the new Minis, sliding them around with incredible precision and driving about on two side wheels. Very Cool. The best car of the whole show has to be the Bentey Continental GT. It was simply *gorgeous*, so beautiful, so fast, so awesome, and just soooo expensive. At the end of the day I had to get a rail replacement bus to Derby and took a train from there (I think the first train to leave there all day). It was handy, 'cos it would have taken me forever by bus. I met Jon and Johannes in town and we went for Subway (the only place that was open late on a Sunday). I just collapsed when I got home, it was a long day.

Made my way to Birmingham early this morning to see my friend Dan. It was great, we walked around town, had a great late lunch and sat by the canal on a nice sofa with some drinks and had a chat for a while. Later on we went to see xXx with his housemate. It was kinda crazy, we bumped into Joe and Hannah in the queue for tickets. I think I scared him, its a small world. Anyway, xXx is an alright movie, the action is cool, and it was loud and *fun* to watch, but there was not exactly much of a story and some of it was just sooo cheesy in places.

24th October 2002
Its all soo depressingly dark at about 6:30am that I can't even type this without turning my desklamp on. One of those nifty little white LED USB flylights would be sooo useful! To think that I used to regularly get up at this time... Anyway, just what is up with this? If it is vaguely correct, I'm living in some kind of dodgy american ghetto replica city (probably Tony Blair's ultimate dream). Or whoever was writing that article was taking the piss. Or whoever the journalist was interviewing was quite stoned and had a few ideas after wathing too many gangsta documentaries on Channel 5. Who Knows?

Installed apache at Home and in Nottingham. I don't really know why, I think its just because I can. More places to put stuff, and I suppose it might be useful for something oneday.

Went to Michelles birthday party today. It was great! I met loads of people, and lots of my friends were there too. I got back at about 4am or so in the morning which was fairly ridiculous, but it was all good.

Went Go Karting again today with Matt, Sid, Ceri, JCM, Johannes and Mustafa. It was great fun this time, we had a team and there was some proper racing going on. It was a two and a half hour endurance race split between our seven drivers, and twelve teams taking part. I had two painful encounters with the barriers on my 20 min stint, mainly from other karts ramming me into them. Still, I turned in the second fastest lap time of our team behind Matt (who works there, and is pretty damn fast) and 0.1 secs in front of Sid. We came sixth overall, which was not too bad as a few of our drivers had never been karting before. It was an awesome day. When the weather clears up, I'm all up for 70mph outdoor karting ;)

13th October 2002
Had a great party at my house in Harrow today. Lots of family came around, and we ate lots of great food and cake. It was pretty good to see so many of my cousins and aunties after such a long time. I'm on the way back to Nottingham right now, does to get back at about midnight or so becuase I was a dumbass and missed all the earlier trains. Also, after using my new 6310i for a while today, I've found it to be more of a great phone than I thought yesterday. Its not all that big, its just manly.

12th October 2002
Upgraded my mobile phone today. I was going to keep my old phone and trade in the new one at Computer Exchange (which would have got me some cash). Well, that was the original plan until I remebered that my sister wanted a new phone. So she gets my great little Nokia 8210, and I get a shiny new Nokia 6310i instead. The 6310i is impressive, it does lots of things (Bluetooth, IR, WAP, HSCSD, GPRS, Java, Voice Control...), it has loads of memory for stuff, and the battery is supposed to have a 17 day standby. Its pretty awesome and packed with stuff, like a voice and conversation recorder, timers, todo lists, calendar events and whatnot. Yup, its an awesome phone yet I don't think I'm going to use half the features, and I think I'm slowly missing the size of the 8210. I should have remembered to stick with minimalism.

Made my way back down to London for the weekend with jcm today. It was cool, we met a girl (I forget her name) and had a good conversation with her for quite a while.

6th October 2002
Another totally amazing day. In the morning Av, Matt, Sam, Ceri and her friend stayed over so it felt like the party kept going until midday. Then after a little while we left for Matt's surprise birthday party (the surprise being that his birthday was a couple of months ago). It was great, there was a bouncy castle and lots of great food. Sid and I lazed about at his house with his brother and sisters for quite a while after everyone else had gone home. In the late afternoon we thought it would be a laugh to go indoor Go-Karting. It was amazing fun, the track was nice, the karts were fairly quick (quite oversteery though) and I only crashed into a wall once :) After all that adrenaline we chilled at Matts house again for a while before he drove us back. Best weekend since Sid & I went to Edinburgh.
